Electronic Drum Pads

Posted on | March 1, 2009 | No Comments

As well as standard and electric drum kits, there are also table-top versions of electric drum pads available. These are even more portable than their full-size electric counterparts and this makes them ideal for those band rehearsals when it’s impossible to transport a full kit. They’re also great for practicing at home in limited space as they can be squeezed into a tight corner on a desk or table and stored away afterwards.

Traditionally, drums have been one of the problem areas for bands. Transporting them requires a large car or van and rehearsal rooms need to be big enough to accommodate the full kit. This isn’t ideal if you’re practicing in someone’s front room or you have to squeeze your drum kit into your bedroom. An electronic drum pad provides a sensible solution and many of the newer pads successfully recreate traditional sounds. Whilst these might not be stadium quality, they are certainly good enough for practice sessions.

Different sounds are available on many drum pads, as are accompaniments and effects, making it easy to create tracks or get in a little extra practice from the comfort of your bedroom. There is also the added bonus of the headphone socket so you won’t be disturbing anyone and you can keep drumming all night, if you want to. The effects on many models allow you to recreate different sounds and allocate a drum beat to different instruments. There are also backing tracks and many models offer software, with songs that are missing the drum element so you can play along. Certain models also offer extras such as adjustable pad sensitivity. Again, it will come down to how much you want to spend and whether you are just starting out or whether you’re looking an alternative to a standard drum kit, for certain situations. A basic electronic drum pad is also an economical way to see whether children who are interested in learning the drums are really keen. If they do well on one of these then they can move on to a bigger kit; if not, you haven’t lost out too much on money or space.
